Final Task - 'Wanted'

Final idea:

The genre I chose to follow for my opening will be a ‘Thriller’ non-fiction. I need to ensure that my opening will be effective and a high quality in order for the audience to be interested and for it to grab their attention. In order to do this I am going to really focus on the variety camera shots/angles that I can use and as well as the music that I will use that it will perfectly suit the opening so that it creates tension and suspense. The idea of my opening is for the audience to start off by making their own accusations of what would happen towards the end of the opening and rest of the film.
The overall idea of my opening is going to be based on the thriller genre where a male character stalks a women who potentially has something that is very important to the male actor, however the audience are not aware of this at the time until further on the film.
The purpose of my opening will be to start off with introducing the characters and by not revealing so much of the male actor as this is to create the tension and suspense. The majority of these shots are ‘Point of View’ shots with a couple of ‘Medium close ups’ of the male actor to show his appearance.
I want to create the tension by using a similar idea to a stalker and the phone lines being the only way of communication for the male character and the female character.
I do not want to give too much away of the story in this opening so I mostly only showed the female characters vulnerability in her own house. I will not use dialogue between the two main characters that are introduced as I want to save this for further on the film as it would give too much away in the first two minutes. I want to keep it short and interesting and not overloaded with dialogue etc.
Story board:

WRITE ABOUT THE CHANGES:
Shot list: Because I did not use any dialogue and had used very few words, I had to make sure that I created an effective opening by using camera shots and angles to portray the 'Thriller' genre.
‘Extreme close up’- introducing male actor this will be shot inside the car, through the windscreen mirror. This is so the focus will be on the eyes, so it may signify the idea that hes watching or waiting for something.
‘Long shot’- Introducing the female actor. I will use a Long Shot so that the audience will see the location and surroundings. And will know that the female actor has come home from work.
Various ‘Point of view’ shots - 'High angle/long shot'- Throughout the minute or so various 'Point of view' shots will be used so relate to the 'Thriller' genre and to the idea of the female being watched/stalked/followed.
'High angle following shot', 'High angle/tilt/medium shot'- By using this type of angle used on actors would make the actor seem intimated or quiet however in my case for the film idea I will use this shot so that the male actor would be seen looking at the female walking. Also so that the actors actions will be seen.
'Medium/close up'shot
Walking out of alley shot?
‘Following/pan' shot- This will be performed from inside of the car when the female actor walks out of the alley way and walks in front of the car. This also reflects the 'Point of View' shots as the female actor is being watched.
'Medium/following' shot to a 'long' shot- This shot will have a similar effect to the previous stated shot however the shot will be closer to the females body to show more of her actions.
'Close up'- I will use a number of close up shots to really represent each characters emotions and actions.
'Match On Action'- I will use this technique when the female gets home and she opens the door and is seen walking through the otherside. This is so that it breaks up the scene and quickens it, I also find this a good and interesting technique.
'Tilt/medium shot','Medium close up', 'Low angle/medium close up'- This shot when the female gets another call, this type of shot would make the actor/character seem powerful however in my opening you would expect the women to feel slightly vulnerable but I do not want the women to show fear this too soon in the opening.

· 'Close up' (Of a puddle; perhaps if its raining to create more of an atmosphere - then suddenly being trodden through by the mysterious character, and a close up of the object/gun in his hand)
· 'Tilt' revealing the character walking from behind (from the feet to the back of the head)
· Various 'Point of view shots' or 'Over shoulder shots' to show what the character is viewing/looking at. (Such as: whilst walking, viewing the moon and seeing the trees pass by it - due to the movement of the character) a 'Dolly' movement can be used for this. Or using the 'point of view shot' and 'Passing Shot' to show another mysterious character, looking through the trees/twigs.
· 'High Angle' shot to make the character look vulnerable and as if someone or something is looking down on him. This shot will also be used to show the characters feet in movement, walking through the leaves on the ground.
· Blurred effect/out of focus to show the characters ‘point of view’ on the floor waking up.
· 'Depth of field' to focus on the 'gun' and hand resting on the ground.
· 'Flash Back' effect / 'Reverse' of the scenes just shown to go back and show the other mysterious character going to do exactly what was just shown, but instead, the first intended assassin turns around and suddenly hits the other around the head with his gun.
Production schedule:
Monday 15/11 – Planning final idea and research (Thinking up of a suitable idea that relates to my chosen genre which is a 'Thriller'. Research will be looking at existing film openings and looking back at books I have previously read which are all 'Thriller' genres)
Thursday 18/11 – Planning final idea and storyboard (Making sure that the idea I have is consistent and understandable, also with the camera shots and angles used that they will be suitable. Creating a storyboard with all sketches from each scene to show how each scene will be set and laid out and exactly what shot will be performed. This can change when actual filming. Also looking for Royalty Free music.
Friday 19/11 - Location viewing (I will spend some of my free time going out and about looking at suitable locations that are easily accessable and are safe and importantly meet the requirements of my chosen film idea).
Monday 22/11 – Prepare location and actors (Making sure that all the locations I have chosen are suitable and the weather is okay in order to film outside in, also preparing the actors so they know what time we will be meeting and what actions they will be performing and their costume and props are ready and available).
Thursday 25/11 – Plan timings etc for filming (Looking at the timings of when the actors are available and suits them to plan when to film. I have to consider this and make sure that the actors will be reliable and consistent with their timings.
Monday 29/11- Organise equipment and first night of filming outside (Get the equipment and props ready to be taken out. The first start of the actual filming process itself. How exciting!
Thursday 02/12 – Capture filming check for lighting quality (Using Adobe Premiere Pro I will capture all footage received and will place on the timeline to cut unnecessary sections out, and place in order for later on.
Friday 03/12 and Saturday 04/11 – Filming outside again for back up shots and rest of shots (Gettting the last parts of the scenes filmed and take back up shots of any ideas that I can think of at the time).
Monday 06/12 – Filming inside house (Filming inside the house, I will need to ensure that the house is quiet and that there will be no disruptions. Filming in the house will be easier I hope, as there will be no public or disruptions from cars etc.)
Thursday 09/12- Capture and edit film footage (Again on Adobe Premiere Pro I will capture the rest of the footage and will edit and cut all unnecessary sections out).
Friday 10/12 – Edit film (By finishing cutting the footage and adding video transitions).
Monday 13/12 – DEADLINE FOR MAIN TASK (All work WILL be completed and handed in)

These dates are guidelines for me to follow in order for me to ensure that I keep on track and meet the deadline.

First film night will be Monday 29th November 2010 in the evening around 5pm until 6pm depending on any errors or disruptions that may occur.
Production log:
From Monday 15th November 2010 until Thursday 25th November 2010 this period was spent preparing all the key aspects of the filming process i.e. the planning of the final idea and making sure that the idea works well and is understandable, researching ideas and camera angles/shots that I could use throughout my filming in order to portray the right emotions and atmosphere of the 'Thriller' genre at the same time looking at Royalty Free Music to use. During this time I also spend a few hours out of lesson time to look at different locations that would be suitable and would create the right atmosphere. I looked at locations during the light hours of the day and as well when it was dark, to decide when the best time would be in order for the footage and idea of the film to be suited. During the lesson time I had, I spent a majority of this time preparing and planning what I will be doing on the filming nights and organising the costumes etc. also sketching out the storyboard and scanning this.

On Monday 29th November 2010 this was the first night of filming (the night time suited the idea/theme of the opening genre best). The first footage I caught was the footage outside of the house, this was so that I could capture the footage in my next media lesson so that I could check the lighting quality and re-film certain parts if necessary. Fortunately the footage I caught was good quality and the lighting levels were right to how I wanted it to come out as. However I did not manage to shoot every aspect of the outside shots due to errors and complications so I had to save this for the weekend. From the footage I did manage to get I edited this and put in to place ready for post-production.

On the Friday 3rd December 2010 and Saturday 4th December I went back outside to film the rest of the footage, as well as back up shots. This was done in a couple of hours over both days, I was restricted for time though as the camera was low on battery.

The 6th December 2010 was the day I captured the whole of the inside out the house shots, which I finished successfully. It ran through well, and I managed to get plenty of back up shots.

Thursday 9th December and Friday 10th December 2010 was the start of the post-production process, I worked solidly on this for two days in order to finish it for the deadline, which I was sucessful at meeting. I worked very hard throughout the filming process and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Asset list:
-       Sony HD Camera recorder with cable to charge overnight and when necessary.
-       Large tripod for high angles and to support the camera for steady shots.
-       Two actors; a Male and a Female.
-       Costumes: Male (all black NO labels, or patterns etc) Female (Smart, work wear).

Final piece - help/research/influences

For my final piece I found it hard to think up of a completely new idea for a fiction film. The idea had to encourage the audience to continue watching the film until the end. Within this 2 minute sequence we should have created an:
-'Enigma' which is a technique for creating a mystery,
-'Cliff hanger' is where an end of either an episode or series or film that stops at a interesting moment where you would expect to see. These MUST make the audience 'hooked'. The ideas must be creative and easy to understand as the beginning and ending of a film launches the narrative of the film.

From the ideas based on books, to help me think more into angles of thrillers and some useful props, I looked at two book Promos: No Time For Good Bye and Fear The Worst. These were books written by Linwood Barclay.

Heres screenshots that I put together from each of the Promos to help influence me.

Because I found it hard to come up with ideas, my previously explained ideas were based around books, however I had developed them ideas further to a more advanced theme. This seemed quite complicated though, and the sequence to make and film would be longer than 2 minutes. If I shortened the idea then it would not make sense and may bore the audience. Below is my preparation sheet and brainstorm of ideas that I came up with. Baring in mind these ideas were rough ideas to help me start up. These would then be further on developed.
Below is evidence of my rough plans and ideas for my final piece.

Ideas for my final peice (opening sequence)

For my first two ideas, they are influenced by books that I have read and found really interesting and have always wanted to see a film based on them. Now I have the chance to create an opening sequence I would really like to try and create one based along the idea of the book, however I will change the story around to make it more my own.
Idea 1: 'The Question of the Unknown'

My first idea and my most favourable was influenced by one of my favourite thriller genre books ‘No Time For Goodbye’ by Linwood Barclay. This book is full of twists and anxiety to make you want to read on it’s simply “mind gripping”.  Although my idea is based around the book, I have made a few minor changes such as the characters names, change of the title and added a few bits here and there. So here is how the story goes...

Nadine was a typical teenage girl who wanted to go out, party have a laugh. After a night were she snuck out a with a few friends she wakes up with a nasty hangover and an even worst feeling about how livid her parents are going to be with her when she sees them. She goes downstairs to make herself a glass of water and toast. The house is unusually quiet, she realises that the house is empty but to check she looks at the time and sees that its only 15 minutes early than the time her parents usually go to work. She calls up to her parents but there's no answer, so she calls her brother Billy but again there is no reply. Nadine looks for a note but there is no sign, she checks the whole house. (she rings her parents, and Billy, then calls her aunt but they have not heard from them).

25years later Nadine still is haunted by the unanswered question why did her family leave her alone without any trace? Were  her family murdered? If so why was she spared? Or did they abandon her for no reason?
Now she is married and has a daughter of her own, but Nadine fears that her new family will be taken away from her as well. She takes part in a TV documentary which revisits the events that happened near that time and the whole case, hoping that someone will remember or figure out what may have happened. Until one day she receives a mysterious letter that could start to stir things up.

Ideas that I have come up with to support/direct the opening:
  • Possibly either a female narrator (who happens to be the daughter explaining the story) as a voice over and a low non-digetic sound (music) in the background with a few digetic sounds OR the female actor talking as the opening sequence follows.
  • Location: In the book, one of the locations is a quarry and I so happen to live near a quarry so I thought I could take a shot of the quarry which will be visualised at the start of the opening which will hopefully make the audience wonder why there is a quarry involved?
  • Newspaper Article with the headline stating about the missing parents/abondaning of the girl.

Idea 2
Again influenced by another thriller genre book written by Linwood Barclay, I have thought about creating my opening sequence based around the book ‘Fear the Worst’. The idea will be changed to make it more of my own, if I chose to take this idea on. However for now, I will be sticking to the draft idea I have got for now. Here is how the story goes...
Sydney works in the near hotel. She was meant to have finished her shift an hour ago, her father was waiting for her return, he thought that she may have stayed to do extra time but just hadn't rung to tell his dad. It began to get later, and the father was starting to get worried so he drove down to the hotel to find out where she was. When he got to the hotel he asked them if they had seen Sydney and what hours she was working and what time her shift ended but the hotel did not have the hours that she was working and they did not even know who Sydney was. He thought this was odd, why had she lied to him about working?
So he rung around and went to Sydney's friends to find out whether they had seen her,  they couldn’t even tell him where she had been weeks before her disappearance. As the days go by the father has to face not only the fact that his daughter is missing but the fact that his daughter that he loved and nurtured and who he thought he knew as well as everyone but she is a virtual stranger. So he has to try and find out why his daughter has disappeared and where she is.
But what he does not know is that he is being watched. There are others who want to find Sydney as much as her father does. Will he find her?

Idea 3

This idea was just an idea I thought of, as a kind of back up plan incase my other ideas would be too difficult to create in the time restricted, the locations and the usage of equipment etc. This idea is simple, but still interesting and will create anxiety to relate to my thriller themed ideas. Although the idea is simple, I know I can get different shots used within this, so this may be the ideal one, however with planning im sure I can do my best with the other ideas. Since Ive been to a caravan holiday almost everyday was raining so we ended up going out for a bit but coming back to the caravan early so that we could get warmed up. During this time, we only had the tv channels BBC1, BBC 2, ITV3, C4. So instead of watching something I would usually watch I ended up watching 'Midsomer Murders' on ITV3, since watching this I have not stopped watching it. For the opening of each episode they will show the murder..but not showing the actual murderer only the victim. This is so that the audience can be intrigued into watching further to try and work out who possibly was the murderer. Exciting stuff! So my idea will start off similiarly to this.
What happens is...There will be a gardener gardening, and he will drink a tea that he was given, all of a sudden he will start to choke and fall on the floor (the drink will have been poisoned)and will die. But before this the gardener will look up to the house as he will feel that someone is watching him, but he sees noone. then drinks etc.

Prelim Task - 'Manderella' and Evaluation

This tasked is based on a preliminary exercise to prepare us for our final piece of coursework. For this task we had to film a short piece and then edit it. The piece had to include a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character who then should exchange a few lines of dialogue. Importantly the task MUST demonstrate ‘Match on Action’, ‘Shot/Reverse/Shot’ and the ‘180-degree rule’.

SHOTS THAT THE TASK MUST INCLUDE:
Match on Action (Match cut) - This is when an action shot begins in one view and is then completed in another. When editing carefully the movement across the two shots should match. This is performed by film makers to create the shot seem like the motion is continuing without being uninterrupted. However for a real match on action, the action should begin in the first shot and end in the second shot. In our piece this shot was used when one of the characters opened the door and then was seen at the other side of the door as if they had walked through.
Shot/Reverse/Shot – This is a classical used technique that is used in a variety of ways, but it is mainly used in dialogue sequences. This shot utilizes the 180-degree rule, the eye line match and rule of change among others. The shot works like this, one character is shown looking at another character; the other character is shown looking back at the first character. The characters will be shown facing opposite directions but it gives the impression that they are looking at each other. This was used in our piece when the male character and the female character were exchanging dialogue.
The 180-degree rule – This is a very important rule, and should be done carefully because if it is shot in the wrong way, the shot will look obviously wrong and will not work. This rule works by using an imaginary line which is cut through the middle of the scene from side to side with the cameras positioned within the field of 180ยบ. If the line is crossed it changes the viewers perspective in a major way, it can cause disorientation and confusion for the viewers.

References USED to help understanding camera shots/angles:
This preliminary task we had to include a script, storyboard, shot-list and production schedule.
Script – We created a script that would be used by the two actors throughout the filming. The script was also used a reference when actually filming as stage directions/actions were listed which also indicated what shots we were to film. The image shown is of the draft script used, so if changes had to be made then it could be done. This was then further developed and typed up which was then the ‘Final draft’ and this was used for the actor’s dialogue.

Storyboard – The storyboard was created to help give a visual idea of what the scene should be like. It also helps us to provide what is needed in the scene like actors, props and location/set before the filming commences. Underneath each sketch notes were written to illustrate what angles, shots will be used. Also it gives a brief description of what will happen in the scene.

Production schedule
A production schedule is used as a project plan in film making; it explains how the production budget will be spent over a time scale. It includes such elements like stating cast crew members, shot list, locations, timings, equipment. In large budget films they would include also actors, special effects, wardrobe, special equipment, stunts, extras/silent bits, props, make-up/hair, extras/atmosphere, vehicles/animals, sound effects/music and production notes. This production schedule helped to keep the filming go on track and manage our timescale.

Equipment list: In which will be needed for Monday 8th November 12.50pm.
·       Filming camera with charger
·       Film/record
·       Tripod
·       Chair/sofa
·       Table
·       Actors a male and a female
·       Lighting/lights
·       Props- dress and door
The filming for this task will be taking place in school during our Monday lesson period 3 and 4..in this we have about 3 hours to film..This is without disruptions/errors.

SHOT LIST:
First part –
Location: ‘Art block’ stairway
The first shot taken will be a ‘high angle shot’ this is when the two actors are walking up the stairs walking towards the door that they will be walking through. The angle will then change to a ‘tilt’ to a ‘following shot’ once they have reached to the doorway.
(This should take approximately 10minutes without disruption.)

Second part –
Location: School ‘Art block’ corridor
The shot will be a ‘close up’ of the two actors walking through the door, this is when the ‘Match on Action’ will be performed. This will quickly be changed to a ‘long shot’ which will be of the actors walking down the corridor towards the door to the room. A ‘close up’ shot will be used to show one of the actors hand about to open the door.
(This should take approximately 10minutes without disruption.)

Third part -
Location: School ‘photography/media studio
This is another ‘Match on Action’ as the actors will be seen walking through the door. A ‘close up’ of the female actor putting the dress on to a table.
(This should take approximately 5minutes.)

Fourth part -
Location: School ‘photography/media studio’
This is where the 180-degree rule is performed and the main part of the dialogue is exchanged.
(This should take approximately 15-20minutes.)

Fifth part -
Location: School ‘photography/media studio’
The female actor exits the room; this is a ‘long shot’. The camera is then quickly switched to the male actor  to a ‘Point of view shot’ where the actor is shown to be glancing at the dress. A ‘close up’ of the dress is shot and then back to the actor with a blurred surrounding.
(This should take approximately 15minutes.)

Sixth part –
Location: School ‘Art block’ corridor
The female actors are seen walking through the corridor towards the rooms door, this is performed as a ‘long shot’, it quickly changes to a ‘close up’ of the actors at the door. Again a ‘Match on Action’ is shot and straight after a ‘Medium close up’ is shown which shows the female actors facial expressions.
(This should take approximately 10minutes without disruption.)

Seventh part –
Location: School ‘photography/media studio’
The male actor is seen dancing and singing with the dress on this is filmed as a ‘Medium long shot’, this then changed to a ‘close up’ of the male actor speaking. The camera then is switched to ‘medium close up’ of the female actors who speak standing within the doorway.
(This should take approximately 10minutes without disruption.)

Estimated Total filming: 65 minutes (minimum) - 75 minutes (maximum) = These timings were estimated due to the fact errors occurred and we had disruptions with rooms etc.
